Reema was a girl of small village of Uttranchal India. She was very strong in studies from her younger age. However, her school was only up to eight standards. In this part of India twenty year back, it was not a part of life to educate girls. Reema stood first in the eighth class exams and got distinction. Therefore, state government allowed her free studies up to twelfth standard. Her great success in studies forced her parents to consider her for higher studies. They decided to send her to Srinagar, a remote town of Uttarnchal, where higher studies were available. In Srinagar her uncle had his shop and he was living there with his family.
Reema left for the Srinagar for completed her studies. This was good experience for her. Earlier, she had never been to Srinagar because girls were not allowed to travel outside home and if they have to travel then they can only go out with some male member of family. Reema easily got admission in school due to her good marks and started studying in it. She was enjoying all this because she was seeing completion of her dreams. Now, she was studying with a big group of boys and girls. In her class there were about ninety students studying with her. One day when she was leaving school on a rainy day, she found herself trapped in heavy rain and started looking for a shelter. From somewhere a hand reached to hold her hand and pulled her inside a shop where lots of other people were also standing to save themselves from rain.
It was the hand of Sanjeev, a boy from her class. This was first time a boy has held her hand. After, rain was over they both left for their homes without any talk. Now after this incidence, Reema found that Sanjeev was mostly trying to see her when she was not seeing him. Nearly a year passed without any word from both of them. At the end of session, their class had to give farewell party to tenth class. For this all the arrangement was mostly done by the students of ninth class. For this a group of students were made, in which Sanjeev and Reema were also part. This situation provided them chance to speak with each other. They also took part in some programs collectively. Year passed and they got the chance to go to next standard, however few of their friends were not lucky enough to clear their exams.
Now, Sanjeev and Reema are fast friends. They meet regularly and interact with each other often. They share their dreams with each other. From inside both of them had started liking each other. Sanjeev told Reema that he wanted to become an engineer and then wants to construct big roads and bridges for his state. Reema told him that she wanted to become a teacher and educate girls of her state. They both now had love for each other and wanted to live together. Their tenth standard exams got over and Reema left to her village with a commitment to meet again. While going to the village Reema was happy that she has got Sanjeev. After reaching home Reema had some surprise waiting for her. Her house was decorated like a wedding house. She asked her mother what was going on.
Her mother told her that it was her marriage. She told her that she was very lucky that she was liked by the Mohan, a Suvedar in the army and he wants to marry her. As he had very less holiday left therefore they were going to marry her tomorrow. It looked to Reema that someone had taken land away from her feet. Before she could react, she was a married woman. On the start of new session Sanjeev waited for the Reema, but there was no Reema.
